On August 21,1862 Benjamin was living at or near Hopedale in Tazewell County, Illinois, where he joined the Civil War in Company F of the 73rd Illinois Infantry. On January 13, 1863 he was discharged from the Army as the result of a gunshot wound which disabled him. He drew a small pension for the remainder of his life.
Returning to Hopedale, he married Lovina Isabelle Sparrow September 15, 1865. She was the daughter of Felix Grundy Sparrow and Elizabeth Ellen Bright Sparrow. Shortly after their wedding they moved to Nebraska.
During the next 27 years they were to have eleven children, the 6th being my grandma, Mary Leona Morris.
Benjamin did what he could to earn a meager living, including running a meat market and farming for awhile.
In 1914, his wife Lovina died and Benjamin moved to Colorado, eventually settling at Rocky Ford. It was here that he died May 8, 1931 and was buried May 13, 1931 in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
According to his death certificate, he was married at the time of his death, but I have been unable to determine
what her name was.
