John (Johan) Alfred, the son of Johann and Maria (Heimberg) Tschannen was born in Ostermannigen, Bern, Switzerland on November 20, 1868. Johan Alfred's name was changed to John when he and his family came to America in September of 1888.
The family lived on a farm on Aucutt Road in Montgomery, Illinois, where acres of red carnations were raised for the dining cars of the Burlington trains.
John was united in marriage on December 7, 1898 to Dora E. Ohrt, and to this union were born six sons; Walter, Ernest, Arthur, Frederick, John, and Herbert Leroy, and two daughters; Rose and Dorothy.
John (Johan), was a brother to; Marie, Elisa, Anna, Rosa, Friedrich, twins; Ernst and Lena, Rudolf, Freda, twins; Emma and Bertha, Albert, and a brother Johann, who was the first child born to Johann and Maria Tschannen and passed away at the age of 8 months on February 21, 1868.
John is buried at the Riverside Cemetery, in Montgomery, Illinois.
