Ines C. Hoffmann, 88, of Springfield died at 9:55 p.m. Monday at her residence.

She was born Oct. 15, 1905, in Springfield, the daughter of Bayard Lacey and Agnes Fullenwider Catron. She married George C. Hoffmann in 1929; he died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a sister and brothers.

Mrs. Hoffman was appointed in 1957 to an unexpired term as commissioner of Accounts and Finance and elected to that office for two terms, ending in 1967. She was city corporation counsel from 1955-57. She was vice chair of the Illinois Air Pollution Control Board from 1963-67 and member of the Springfield Housing Authority board from 1969-81, including a term as chairwoman.

She served on the boards of Lincoln Library, YWCA, Mental Health Association of Springfield and Child and Family Service. She was president of Butler Grade School PTA and Springfield Maternal Health Center.

She graduated from Wellesley College, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1925 and University of Chicago Law School, Order of Coif, in 1928. She practiced law in Springfield with her father from 1929-44 and then with her father and husband in the firm of Catron and Hoffmann. From 1945-87 she practiced with her husband in the firm of Hoffmann and Hoffmann.

Mrs. Hoffmann was moderator of the Women's Assembly at First Presbyterian Church. In 1953, she became the first woman elder of the congregation. She was a member of Grateful Daughters Circle of King's Daughters' Home for Women, the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. She was a charter member of Zonta Club of Springfield, and president of PEO Chapter CA and Sunnyside.

She received a citation for public service from the University of Chicago, an award of merit from the Springfield chapter of DAR and a distinguished public service award from the Springfield-Urbana chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. She was an honorary member of Alpha Iota and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was named outstanding career woman by the Springfield Business and Professional Women's Club in 1953 and in 1964 was named by the American Business Women's Association as one of the 10 leading businesswomen of the United States.

Surviving are four sons, George of Indianapolis, Donald of Kansas City, Mo., John of Champaign and Frederick of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
