Walter C. Vitt

Walter C. Vitt, 79, a lifelong resident of St. Paul, died at 4:25 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2009, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul. He had been in failing health.
He was born August 16, 1929, in St. Paul, Kansas, to George H. and Helen C. "Nellie" (Judge) Vitt. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul where he graduated from St. Francis High School. He then attended Kansas State University for a short period before entering the United States Navy where he served three years during the Korean Conflict.

Following his discharge, he returned to St. Paul where he farmed with his father and worked as an auto mechanic. On October 13, 1953, he and Pauline A. Hammerbacher were married at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard. After marriage, they continued to live in St. Paul where they farmed and raised their family of nine children.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Through the years, he enjoyed grafting pecan trees, and especially looked forward to spending time with his children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include: Wife – Pauline Vitt of the home, St. Paul, KS Five Sons – Leo Vitt Sydney, NE Martin Vitt Fontana, KS Francis Vitt Erie, CO Dennis Vitt St. Paul, KS Marvin Kavanagh Olathe, KS Four Daughters – Roberta Leon Leavenworth, KS Christine Vitt Columbia, MO Theresa Vitt Leavenworth, KS Marilyn Lappin Prairie Village, KS Twelve Grandchildren Four Great-Grandchildren Four Brothers – John Vitt Bartlesville, OK Paul Vitt Bartlesville, OK Bernard Vitt Tulsa, OK Don Vitt St. Paul, KS Two Sisters – Helen Vitt St. Paul, KS Gretchen Belfield Pittsburg, KS

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 8, 2009, at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, at St. Francis Catholic Church where the family will receive friends immediately following. Friends may call at the church after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
