Robert J. Canan died Saturday morning after protracted illness. Was born in Eastern Pa. in 1820 so was 76 years. Deceased well known all over Venango county. Elected county treasurer in 1865 and filled office with honesty and fidelity. In 1869, through influence of Hon. C. w. Gilfillon, then representing this district in Congress, he was appointed postmaster of Franklin, Pa., to succeed R. M. Brigham. After term expired he returned to his farm in Clinton township and engaged in agricultural pursuits. Some years ago disposed of his farm and has since been living in Clintonville. Leaves wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters, viz: Ruth, wife of Charles B. Reeves; William J.; Edward, of Evans City, Butler county; R. J. of Franklin; Hattie, wife of Cooper Beggs, of Butler; Frank J. and Lottie, wife of Henry Kelly. Was kind, loving and affectionate father and husband.

Another article: ...Belonged to pioneer family of that part of the county and was last survivor of old Canan family. Wife was Sarah Hovis, last survivor of pioneer Hovis family. Removed to Franklin in 1861, eleven years resident of this city. .... in 1872 with two years unexpired, he resigned (as postmaster) and returned to Clintonville, succeeded by his chief clerk, D. D. Grant. In politics, active and staunch Republican. Religion - consistent member of M. E. Church. Leaves wife, four sons, and three daughters - Mrs. C. B. Reeves, William and Frank G. of Clintonville, E. H. Canan of Evans City, Robert C., of Franklin, Mrs. Cooper Beggs of Butler County, and Mrs. Newton Kelley of Allegheny County.
