An article from the Waseca Radical, Mar. 20, 1897, P. 5, reports:
Miss Emma Vonsien, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vonsien of Woodville, was united in marriage to Mr. Edward Beese Wednesday, March 17. Mr. Beese is the owner of a fine farm in the northern part of the county where the happy couple have gone to reside.

With Edward D. Beese, she had two children:
1) Clarke Edward Von Sien Beese, b. Jan. 08, 1898 and d. Jun. 22, 1908.
2) Lydia Emma Beese, b. Jul. 16, 1901 and d. Sep. 6, 1991 in Long Beach, L.A., CA. Lydia married Clarence Beekman.

On June 22, 1908, Emma's firstborn, Clarke Edward Von Sien Beese, died, tragically, at the age of 10 in Valley City, North Dakota. He was playing on a bridge, squirting water with a squirt gun at people driving across the bridge in carriages. One lady stopped her carriage, and got out with a buggy whip in her hand. Young Beese, who was standing on one of the concrete piles of the bridge, jumped for the shore, but missed and fell into the river. Unable to swim, he drowned.

In the Apr. 21, 1910 U.S. census, 36 yr. old Emma L. Beese, b. in MN., was living in a rented home on Eighth Avenue South Valley City Ward 3, Barnes, ND. with her
36 yr. old husband, Edward B. Beese, a traveling salesman in the lightning rods business, b. in MN.
8 yr. old daughter, Lydia E. Beese, b. in MN.
Emma's father was b. in Germany and her mother in MN. (Germany)
This was a first marriage for both Emma and Edward. They had been married for 13 years. Emma was the mother of two children, only one still alive by this census.

Almost seven months later, on Nov. 9, 1910, Edward Beese died of typhoid fever in Valley City, Barnes county, ND.

Emma and Lydia moved from Minnesota to North Dakota in approximately 1911. She was the head of a dormitory at Valley City State College, Valley City, North Dakota. Her daughter, Lydia, stayed there with her as a girl.

The marriage of Mrs. Anna (Not Anna, but Emma) VonSien if this city to Mr. Robt. Fehmer, of Faribault, Minn., will take place this evening at Wesley Hall at 6 o’clock, Rev. Anderson of Jamestown, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Fehmer will leave on the evening train for the east where they will spend their honeymoon. They will make their home in Faribault where the groom is engaged in business. Mrs. Fehmer has been matron of the Wesley Hall for a number of years and has many friends here who join in well wishes for her happiness.

On Nov. 8, 1918, Emma's husband, Robert Fehmer died quickly of cancer in Valley City, Barnes county, ND.

Miss Emma Von Sien, of the Chaffee store, left Sunday for Minneapolis where she will visit her brother and then will proceed to New York to purchase goods for the Chaffee store and expects to be gone about three weeks.

According to the 1920 U.S. census, 45 yr. old widow, Emsus (Emma) L. Felmer (Fehmer), a cook at a Girls' Club, b. in MN., was living at the club at 81 W. College Av. in St. Paul, Ward 4, Ramsey county, MN.

Emma was a trained practical nurse, and sometimes lived in the home with her patients if they were sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. Among other things, a practical nurse prepared and gave injections and enemas, monitored catheters, dressed wounds, and gave alcohol rubs and massages, emptied bedpans, commodes, cleaned and changed incontinent adults. They also assisted with feeding, bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, moving in bed, standing, and walking.

She was very religious, 'but not stuffy'. She was an outgoing, friendly person with a nice smile and a great sense of humor. She loved cultural things, loved to have fun, loved holidays and made her own Christmas gifts - handmade things such as gloves, beaded bags and knitted things.

Emma suffered from a loss of hair (due to an illness) and wore a 'transformation' (hairpiece) as an adult.

She traveled to California more than once to visit her sisters, Lydia and Claire and later in life, moved to California.

Mrs. U.G. Worley and Mrs. Beese accompanied by their daughters, the Misses Alma Worley and Lydia Beese, spent the weekend in Imperial Valley and returned home via the ridge route and San Bernardino.

Emma and Lydia lived for a while on Heliotrope Drive in Hollywood a few blocks from UCLA where Lydia studied to become a music teacher (vocal and instrumental.) Lydia also attended Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. and the University of Minnesota

Shortly before she died, she fell going down the steps behind her house to go to the incinerator and broke her hip. A pin was put in her hip, but a clot traveled to her brain. She never got back out of bed in San Antonio Hospital in Upland, S.B. Co., Ca. and died a short time later. In those days, people who broke their hip quite often failed to leave the hospital alive.
