Bertha Amalie LANGE, geb. ZIMMERMANN, war die jüngere Tochter des Dachdeckers August ZIMMERMANN und seiner Ehefrau Albertine Pauline ZIMMERMANN, geb. CAROW.

Bertha Amalie (ZIMMERMANN) LANGE was the younger daughter of August ZIMMERMANN, a roofer, and his wife Albertine Pauline (CAROW) ZIMMERMANN.

According to her marriage certificate from the civil registry office in Exin, Kreis Schubin, Province of Posen [today: Kcynia, Poland], Bertha was born in Antonina (Sophienhof) in the Netze valley a few miles south of the Netze/Noteć river. The "village" is located northeast of Samotschin [today: Szamocin] in Kreis Chodziesen/Kolmar i.P., Province of Posen [today: Chodzież, Poland] and is part of Liepe [today: Lipa]. Her husband's U.S. passport application from 1905 says that she was born in "Exin, Kreis Schubin", which is definitely wrong. Her older sister Auguste Mathilde (ZIMMERMANN) WITTKOWSKE had been born in Gollancz/Gollantsch, Kreis Wongrowitz, Province of Posen [heute: Gołańcz, powiat wągrowiecki, Poland].

After her father's death in Samotschin, Bertha moves to Exin, Kr. Schubin, Provinz Posen [today: Kcynia, Poland] together with her mother. Bertha's sister and her family had already been living there. And that's also where she married Hermann Carl LANGE, a cabinet maker, on August 14, 1878. The marriage was witnessed by Hermann's father Ferdinand LANGE, 71 years old and a cabinet maker, too, and by Bertha's 34-year-old brother-in-law Rudolph/Rudolf WITTKOWSKE, a plumber - both from Exin.

She emigrated to the USA in 1887 together with her husband Hermann and her three sons Theodor Ferdinand, Otto Carl and Bruno Paul LANGE. They arrived in New York (Castle Garden) on May 6, 1887 on board the "Norddeutsche Lloyd" (NDL) steamship "Ems" from Bremen.

They made their home in Springfield, MA.

Just like her husband and other relatives living in Springfield, Bertha was deeply rooted in that town's German community. Between 1891 and 1896, Bertha is the secretary of the "D.O.H., Louise Frauen Lodge, No. 2, Hertha Grade" (Deutscher Orden der Harugari / German Order of the Harugari), the order's woman branch.

Between 1901 and 1912, she had been living in Westfield, MA where her husband and her son Otto had been the proprietors of the "Park Square Hotel".

Aged 88, Bertha died in Springfield, MA, on September 2, 1940.
