Carl, age 83, passed away on Saturday after a long illness. He was born the son of Anton & Nellie (Baier) Sam of Pepin County, on May 3, 1926. Following graduation from high school in Arkansaw, Carl joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Bunkerhill. After the Military, he graduated from the Minneapolis School of Business. In Oct. of 1948, he married Margaret Mary Falkner, of Buffalo County, and together they raised eight children. In 1988 Carl retired from the State of Wisconsin where he had worked for 40 years. His favorite activities included playing cards, Las Vegas, HoChunk, dealing craps for "It's Your Party", gardening, traveling by car, and spending time with his family (children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren). Carl was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Monona, where he enjoyed calling bingo. Carl is survived by his wife, Margaret "Marge" Sam; children, David J. (Pamela) Sam, of McFarland, WI, Nancy A. (Paul) Cranley, of Lake Jackson, TX, Gary M. (Susan) Sam, of Belleville, WI, James C. (Pamela) Sam, of Fall River, WI, Ronald J.(Carol) Sam, of McFarland, WI, Laurel M. (Steven) Sly, of Kalamazoo, MI, Lois A. (Jessy) Hintz, of Louisville, CO, and Lisa M. ( Thomas) Gries, of Madison, WI; ten grandchildren, Kevin Sam, Jerome (Kristy) Sam, Eric Sam, Kristine Cranley, Brian Cranley, Marie (Joseph) Flanigan, Matthew Cranley, Jessica (Stephan) Esser, Jared Sam and Jacob Sam; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Sam, Kaitlyn Sam, Samantha Esser and Ivan Esser; sister, Mary Weiss; sister-in-law, Erma Sam; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Joseph, Wendell and Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Immaculate Hear of Mary Catholic Church, Monona, with Fr. John Meinholz presiding. Entombment with military rites was conducted.
