Penelope Businessman Murdered in Hold-Up

John H. Ondrej, Sr. was shot and killed during an attempted armed robbery of his grocery store early Tuesday night in Penelope.

The 44-year-old Ondrej, owner and operator of Ondrej's Grocery and Station, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting at approximately 11:20 p.m. Tuesday by Justice of the Peace Howard English.

As of Wednesday morning, an official at the Hill County Sheriff's Department said there were no suspects in connection with the attempted robbery and killing. The Sheriff's department believes no money was taken in the robbery attempt. The Sheriff's department had not received an autopsy report as of press time Wednesday.

Rosary will be recited for Ondrej at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in the Catholic Church of the Nativity in Penelope with Rev. Publius Xuereb as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Penelope.

Ondrej was born in Hill County and lived in the Penelope and Abbott area all his life. He had been a heavy equipment operator and was the owner and operator of Ondrej's Grocery and Service Station for the past three years.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Nativity in Penelope.

Ondrej was preceded in death by his son, David Wayne in 1971 and his father, August in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae; one son, John Ondrej, Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Annie Ondrej of Penelope; three brothers, Ben Ondrej of Penelope, Lawrence Ondrej of Leroy, George Ondrej of Waco; four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Vybiral of Abbott, Mrs. Evelyn Pappas of Malone, Mrs. Mildred Tooley of Fort Worth, Mrs. Mary Ann Jones of Dallas and several nieces and nephews.
