ANOTHER VETERAN GONE - Through a telephone message Wednesday morning to Geo. Herder of this place, he was informed of the death of (his) father, Col. Geo. Herder, at his home in Lavaca County. Col. Herder was an old veteran, and one of the most prominent Germans in West Texas. He came to Texas in an early day a poor boy, and aided our Lone Star State in her early struggles with the Indians and Mexicans. By industry and economy he accumulated a fine property. He has a son and one daughter living in this place (Shiner, Texas) viz: Geo. Herder and Mrs. Adolph Richter.
(George Herder immigrated to Galveston, Texas in abt 1834 at the age of 16. He was born in Hahnen, Oldenburg. He married Wilhelmina 'Minna' Wolters on Apr 27, 1841 in Frelsburg, Colorado, Texas. By 1860 he had moved to Fayette County. Sometime after 1880 he moved to Half-Moon, Lavaca, Texas to be close to son William (George) Herder. He is believed to have lived there for a period of time and returned to Fayette County before his death. George and Minna were both Citizens of the Republic of Texas.)
