Rev. T. Schulz, Pastor Emeritus, Was Pioneer Church Man In N.W. Kansas

Johann Traugott Schulz, pastor emeritus of the East Lutheran church at Stuttgart, died at his home near there Wednesday, January 13, after many years of service to his community. An immigrant from Germany, Rev. Schulz came to America in 1888 [1885], and after briefly locating in Mendota, Ill., where the theological seminary of the former Evangelical Lutheran Iowa Synod was situated, he was directed to western Kansas, where he has labored in the service of his Lord.

He was first located at Tipton; then his Synod called him into the mission field of Round Mount, near Natoma, where he worked faithfully, until the Emmanuel Lutheran church near Stuttgart called him as its pastor in 1890. Under his administration, the present church of the congregation was built.

Missionary endeavors took him to Hoxie and Goodland, and in 1902, he followed a call to Lehigh. Three years later, Zion Lutheran church in Belmont township extended him a call, and here he worked for eight years before he became pastor at Gaylord.

After thirty-three years of faithful service, Pastor Schulz retired from the active ministry and lived on his farm near Stuttgart. Until his death, he was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran church.

The following obituary has been furnished by Rev. Krauss, pastor of his church:

Johann Traugott Schulz, a son of Johann Schulz and his wife Dorothea nee Heinze, was born December 26, 1858 at Reinwalde [Reinswalde], Germany. Two days later, December 28, he was received into the Triune God through holy baptism. On Palm Sunday 1873, young Traugott was confirmed in the church of his home town Reinwalde [Reinswalde] after due instruction in the faith of the Evangelical Lutheran church.

The young man's most cherished wish was to be a laborer in the Lord's vineyard. His father was a weaver by trade. The father needing his son, the deceased, learned the trade of his father and assisted him in his business trusting the Lord, in his own good time, would grant his heart's desire. He should not trust in vain. Later we find him in the Theological seminary of Breklum (Sleswick) [Schleswig] preparing for the holy ministry.

May 1, 1892, Pastor Traugott Schulz was united in marriage with Miss Anna Friebus of Wilson, Kansas, the Rev. F. Schedtler, whom he had formerly assisted, performing the ceremony. This marriage was blessed with six children four: Erna, Trougott [Traugott], Gertrude, and Lydia, surviving the father two having preceded him to eternity in tender infancy. One adopted son, Edmund, and one foster-son, Rudolph, have found a Christian home in his house.

To his own the deceased was a loving husband and father, to his congregations a humble and faithful shepherd.

The good Lord had endowed Pastor Schulz with robust health. He has never been seriously ill. During the last five years of his life, however, attacks of cramps caused him considerable distress. Apparently well he had risen on the morning of Wednesday, January 13, applying himself to his daily tasks and partaking of the noon meal as usual. In the afternoon, at about 1:30 o'clock, he was suddenly overcome with an attack of his ailment. This time, the attacks repeated in brief intervals after the first two, seven in all. The Lord who had taken the shepherd's staff out of the hand of his servant, would now also take the pilgrim's staff from his hand. At 5:45 o'clock Pastor Traugott Schulz passed peacefully away into his eternal home, at the age of 78 years and 17 days.

His departure mourn his bereaved widow, Mrs. Anna Schulz; his children, Mrs. Erna Beckmann[,] Traugott Schulz; Mrs. Gertrude Anschuetz, Lydia Schulz, Edmond [Edmund] Schulz, Rudolph Schulz; 2 sons-in-law; 2 daughters-in-law; 9 grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law, Mr. J. C. Friebus and family; and many friends.

His earthly remains were laid to rest Saturday, January 16, 1937, on the cemetery of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Stuttgart, the local pastor conducting the funeral service. The Rev. H. Imbrock and the local pastor preached the funeral service based on Matt. 25:21 and 3 Tim. 4:7.8.

May he rest in peace.
