The original spelling of the family surname was POPP (pronounced as "pope") but some family members changed the spelling to POPE to avoid hearing others mispronounce it as "pop."

Note that August was actually born in Woods County, Oklahoma Territory. Major County was created from Woods County at the time of statehood in 1907.

AUGUST W. POPE

August W. Pope, 73-year-old Oklahoma City resident, died suddenly Monday afternoon in a hospital there.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Glen C. Kollmeyer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Brown's.

Pope was born at Fairview where he attended school and after graduation, he moved to the Enid area. On Dec. 4, 1925, he and Blanche W. Jordon were married. They later lived in Wichita, Kan., and Maud before moving to Oklahoma City 25 years ago.

He retired in 1966 as a pipeline inspector for Mustang Fuel Corp.

In addition to his wife Blanche, he is survived by a son, Ronald R. Pope of Grand Prairie, Tex.; two daughters, Mrs. C. E. (Laura) Steadman of Rocky Ford, Colo., and Mrs. Wayne (Betty Jo) Allred of Salinas, Calif.; a stepson, Carlyle P. Pipes of Lake Lotawona, Mo.; five sisters, Mrs. Emma Scheffe Brown, Mrs. Minnie Smith and Mrs. Anna Southwick, all of Enid; Mrs. Clara Wyatt and Mrs. Martha Chitwood, both of Garber; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a niece, Mrs. Alma James of Enid, who grew up in the Pope home.
