Death of Prominent Woman

From Wednesday's Daily

News was received here this morning of the death of Mrs. Judith Gerig, which occured at her home near Avoca, at 2 o'clock, from old age. She was born December 9th, 1822, making her nearly 96 years of age, and until four months ago, quite spry. She was a native of Fritlengen, Germany, coming to this country on March 19, 1866, locating in this city, where she made her home. She was married in this city January 6, 1872, to Henry Gerig, and in the early '70's move to near Avoca where they made their home. She was an intimate friend of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Straub, and on the death of these people she took charge of the children and acted as mother for them.

She was a most devout Catholic, attending church daily and in order to have a church near her home she gave the eighty acre farm on which the church is now located. She was a woman who had many friends and all will regret to learn of her demise.

She lived across the road from Holy Trinity Church (per Maxine Schatz 06/2000)
