He was born February 27, 1914 in the town of Morris, Shawano County, the son of the late Herman and Ottilie (Gutt) Pehlke.
On November 2, 1946 Herbert was united in marriage to Dorothy Grosskopf in Bowler. She preceded him in death on July 19, 1983.
Survivors include four children, Phyllis (Daniel) Marquardt, Wittenberg, Herbert (Cheryl) Pehlke, West Plains, MO, Katherine (Daniel) Ladwig, Bowler and Michael (Betty) Pehlke, Wittenberg; 11 grandchildren, Rachel (Tim) Kautz, Lance (friend, Tina) Marquardt, Julie (Patrick) Leeman, Jeremy Marquardt, Paul Pehlke, Tim Pehlke, Michael Pehlke, Jr., Tanya Ladwig, Rebecca Ladwig, Nichole Pehlke and Donna Jo Pehlke; one step-granddaughter, Joanna Zobjeck; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter Kautz.
In addition to his wife and parents, Herbert was preceded in death by two sisters Vera Baurn and Agnes Schumacher and one brother, Rudy.
Funeral services were held April 18, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowler. The Rev. David Dukovan officiated. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, town of Almon.
