Carl was born in Willershagen, Blankenhagen Parish, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the son of John Heinrich (Henry Charles) and Carolina Fredrika Maria Wolf. He married Christiana Sophia Dorothea Jacobs on August 18, 1865 in Willershagen. Their first child was still-born on April 30, 1866. Their third child, Carl Wilhelm Heinrich Martin Clasen, was born May 24, 1871 and died March 17, 1872. Carl and Christiana immigrated to America in 1876 with their children Fritz and Caroline on the ship Weiland. Carl was a seaman in Europe and a farmer in Milford, Twp. His father (Henry Charles) and brother Frederick were killed by the Indians in the Sioux Uprising in 1862. This probably prompted immigration as his mother was a widow. Carl quit farming before 1895 and moved to New Ulm.
