Fred was born in Willershagen, Blankenhagen Parish, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. He immigrated to American in 1876 with his parents and sister, Caroline. Fred married Maria Lipkow, daughter of Wilhelm and Mathilda Lipkow, in 1891. They farmed in Eden and Milford Twps. and after farming, moved to Sleepy Eye. There he worked as a salesman in a flour mill and as a gateman for the railroad. Fred and Maria had 5 children, Carl, who was married to Josephine Johnson and Theresa Wangness, Martha who married Herbert Wegner, Arthur, Viola, and Armin who married Edith Horsman.
