m: Hugh Rooney - Feb 13, 1882 - Douglas, England

DEATH OF MRS. HUGH ROONEY

Mrs. Hugh Rooney, home-loving, neighborly, kind, passed to her reward Monday evening after an illness of three weeks. Passed to her reward. That is it and an earned reward. A wife in the full meaning of the word; mother of children who adored her; hands ever willing to serve others. Hers was truly a full life. Tributes are mere words for such who have walked upon the earth.
She was born at Peel on the Isle of Man, England and her maiden name was Isabella Sarah Cunningham. She and Hugh were united in marriage at St. Mary's church, Douglass, Isle of Man, February 13, l882. The sacred vow of wedlock, “Till death do us part," never was broken. Maybe it is now old-fashioned but it remains beautiful. Hugh came over to this country ten years later, located in this section of the country and the year following sent for her. The Rooney family never lived far from Sabetha after that, though the boys and girls generally scattered to make their way in the world their way fairly, as they were taught.
Of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Rooney, eight remain. They are: John Rooney of Beardsley, Kansas; Mark Rooney of Fairview; Sister Mary Raymond of Red Bluff, California; Hugh Rooney Jr. of Oakland, California; Mrs. Sarah Studer of Beardsley, Kansas; Patrick Rooney of Kansas City; Mrs. Eva Studer near Sabetha; Charley Rooney of Topeka. Also there are twenty-four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. All the children were able to be home this week except Patrick and Hugh Jr., Patrick was here recently and Mrs. Rooney visited Hugh at Oakland last fall. At the same time she visited her brothers and sisters on the coast.
Mrs. Rooney was especially interested in her church and was an active member of the Altar and Rosary society.
Mrs. Rooney was born August 26, 1858 and thus would have been 74 years of age her next birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Rooney had made their home in Sabetha during the past thirteen years. Prior to that time they lived on the farm in Brown county south of Fairview and near Oneida.
Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church in Sabetha, Wednesday morning, May 18, at 10 a. m. conducted by Father Edmund. The Fidelity choir came to Sabetha to sing high mass. Interment was at 11 a. m. at Fidelity. Here she rests peacefully with those who have gone before, waiting patiently, as wives and mothers do, for others to come.
The pall bearers were three sons: John, Charley, and Mark, and son-in-law, Henry Studer and Fred and Orlie Rooney.
