This community, including friends and neighbors of a life time, sorrow at the death of Hugh Rooney, whose serious illness of recent weeks has caused much concern. Mr. Rooney had gone to St. Mary’s hospital in Kansas City two weeks ago to undergo an operation as soon as his strength would permit. Even his close friends did not realize the seriousness of Mr. Rooney's condition for he did not complain, was inclined to keep silent about his suffering. Thus his passing last Thursday came as a great shock to friends and acquaintances.
Hugh Rooney was born September 15, 1856 in County Down Ireland. He was endowed with the true wit and sunny disposition so often possessed by natives of that charming land as was his good wife, also a native of' that country, whose passing four years ago cast a shadow over her husband's declining years.
The family came to America forty-eight years ago and for thirty years Mr. Rooney was an outstanding farmer in Brown and Nemaha counties. His industry, integrity and ambition were of that unselfish type which not only provided for the comfort and happiness of his family, but included neighbors and friends. He was quick to sense a need of those about him and many a kind deed lightened a burden for one, who wondered how Mr. Rooney knew of the plight of the recipient.
Hugh Rooney was that type of farmer, whose striving to contend with the soil resulted in contentment of mind and soul. He loved the moods and fruits of nature, and expressed his appreciation of abundance when it came and patiently faced the slack periods, looking forward to the future harvests. Words are inadequate to express a worthy tribute to Hugh Rooney. No eulogy could fully present the charm of his personality, the gentleness of his sympathy, the intenseness of his devotion, the steadfastness of his friendship. His was a well lived and serviceable life.
Eighteen years ago the Rooney family moved to Sabetha and friendships were added to those acquired in the rural community. The sunset years of his life have been spent in efforts to lighten the burdens, cheer the hearts, and bring happiness to others.
The passing of his life companion was a bitter experience. They had endured hardships and shared joys for more than a half century and he had to battle the loneliness that fol-lowed. He maintained his home and enjoyed the companionship of his children and grandchildren and the association of neighbors and friends.
Mr. Rooney is survived by five sons and three daughters: John R. Rooney. Beardsley, Kans.; Mark of Fairview; Hugh of Lovelock. Nevada; Pat of Los Angeles, Calif.; Charles, an attorney of Topeka; Sister Mary Raymond of Denver; Mrs. Sarah Studer of Beardsley; Mrs. Henry Studer of Sabetha. He is also survived by several nephews, nieces and cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o'clock at Sacred Heart church in Sabetha, conducted by Rev. Father Roland, of Topeka. The church was filled by relatives and friends who wished to pay a final tribute to a worthy citizen, a helpful neighbor, valued friend and beloved kinsman.
Body bearers were friends and neighbors: Walter Moser, Will Johnson, John Williamson, Will McClain, Paul Masheter and Henry Guise.
Interment was in the Fidelity parish cemetery.
