Peter J. Corapi

Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather Peter J. Corapi, fondly known as "Papa Pete", 92, passed thru to the Gates of Heaven, Friday, May 28, 2010. He was born in Kane, Pa., on January 30, 1918, a son of the late Frank and Antonia Corapi.

Peter was raised in Kane, moving to Erie with his parents and siblings in the late 1930's. He worked with his father on the Pennsylvania Railroad for ten years, then for C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps), in the Kinzua Dam Area, until enlisting in the U.S. Army, went to Europe, served with the 99th Division, fought at the Battle of the Bulge, attained rank of Sergeant Quartermaster, earning various medals and awards.

Peter was a life member of VFW Post 4789, Northeast, American Legion Post 571, Wesleyville and International Brotherhood of Painter and Allied Trades. He worked for General Electric Refrigeration up to 1956, Coursey Painters and Allied Industries, as a union painter, retiring at age 66. Peter's following years would be time meeting with his Elm St. McDonalds Crew every morning, best known for his character sketches, drawn on McDonald napkins and shared with all ages.

In 2002, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mildred, whom he married August 9th, 1947; one daughter Francine Markiewicz ; six brothers, John (Thomasina), William (Connie), Joseph , Michael, Frank and Edward and two sisters, Mary Angela Corapi and Mary Coursey .

Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Brendel, (Charles); a son in law, Dan Markiewicz; two brothers, Tony (Vicki) Corapi, and Thomas (Marge) Corapi; a sister Adeline Giannamore; a sister-in-law, Judy Corapi and a brother-in-law, Dick Coursey, all of Erie.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Carla (Nick) Lassoff, Jason Brendel, Heidi Brendel, Jessica and Christine Markiewicz; great-grandchildren, Mark, Nicholas, Isabella, Mikayla and Sammy. He will be sadly missed by the many lives he touched.

Friends may call at the A. Brugger & Sons Funeral Home, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held there on Thursday at 10:20 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11 a.m.

Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
