Ernst Rudolph Klopmeier was the son of Friedrich Wilhelm Kloppmeyer and Catharina Elsabein Hassmann. He was baptized in an "Evangelische kirche" [German for Protestant church; most likely Lutheran] on 30 Jun 1839 in his hometown of Lengerich, Westfalen, Prussia.

Ernst came to the United States at the age of 19 and lived in Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois for the rest of his life.

Ernst married Gebke "Margaret" Ufken on 11 Mar 1871 in Madison County, Illinois. [Note: Maiden name appears as Ufhen on some records.] They were the parents of 5 children.

Margaret died in May of 1881 at the age of 35.

Children from first marriage: 2 sons, 3 daughters.

Ernst then married Marie "Mary" Tuetken on 15 Sep 1882 in Madison County. He was a farmer and they were the parents of 5 children.

Children from second marriage: 2 sons, 3 daughters.

At the time of his death, Ernst was 83 years, 9 months and 21 days old. He was buried next to his second wife, Marie, on 06 Apr 1923. She passed away in 1906.

DEATH OF ERNEST KLOPMEYER

Ernest Klopmeyer one of the oldest residents of Bethalto, died Tuesday evening at 11:50 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Elliot of First street in Wood River. He was in his 84th year. Mr. Klopmeyer was born in Lengrich, Germany, in 1839 and came to this country at the age of 19 years.

He was a resident of Bethalto and vicinity for more than sixty five years. He was married to Margaret Efken in Ostfriesland, Germany, who died in May 1881. He was then married to Mary Tueken of Ostfriesland, Germany, who also died January 1905.

Short funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. H. J. Elliott in Wood River Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The Rev. Hansen will officiate. The body will then be taken to his former home in Bethalto where it will lie in state until Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at which time funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Church in Bethalto.

He leaves to mourn his death three sons and six daughters, namely Mrs. Henry Tuetken, Nokomis, Mrs. Wm. Stunkel, Edwardsville; Mrs. George Plegge, Bethalto, Ill; Mrs. John Neunaber, Bethalto, Ill.; Mrs. Herbert Elliott, Wood River, Miss Ellen Kloymeyer, Bethalto, George Klopmeyer, East Alton, Ill., Fred Klopmeyer, Edwardsville, and Wm Klopmeyer of Bethalto.
