N. O. Deines Pastes Away at Grand Island

N.O. Deines of this community who had been taking treatment at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island for the past several days passed away there early this morning. Mr. Deines had been in ill health for quite some time. He had retired from business here several years ago. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Earl Buchtel of this city, Miss Kathryn of Grand Island and Mrs. Mary Snyder of Maryland; three sons, Burnette and Royce of Clay Center and Norval of Grand Island. In addition, three brothers, John of Fairfield, Dr. D.A. and William of Clay Center; and five sisters, Mrs. Charles Harris of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Frank Swanson, Pomona, Calif., Mollie, Katie and Anna Deines of this city survive him. His wife preceded him in death four years ago. Funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed as this is written.

Nicholas O. Deines

Nicholas O. Deines, son of John and Magdalena Schleicher Deines, was born Nov. 24, 1875 and passed away at Grand Island, Nebr., on Sept. 22, 1949, at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 28 days. His parents migrated from Germany to Norka, Russia for a short time and came to the United States in April, 1878, when Mr. Deines was two years old. They settled first at Friend, Nebraska, later they lived near Sutton, Nebraska for a time, coming to Clay Center, Nebraska in 1888. Here he grew to manhood and spent most of his years.

He was baptized into the church in early childhood.

On March 9, 1904, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Swingle (sic). To them were born six children, all of whom survive him. They are Mrs. Helen Buchtel, Burnette and Royce Deines of Clay Center ,Kathryn and Norval Deines of Grand Island, and Mrs. Mary Snyder of Silver Spring, Maryland. His wife preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 1945.

During most of his life he was engaged In the meat and grocery business in Clay Center. However, in the fall of 1922 the family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where they lived until 1925. Mr. Deines operated a market there.

His life was devoted to his family and he was greatly Interested in community activities. He was always willing and anxious to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Besides his six children, he Is survived by six grand children; five sisters and three brothers, they are the Misses Katie, Mollie and Anna Deines of Clay Center, Mrs. Margaret Harris of Pomona, Calif., and Mrs. Mildred Swanson of Claremont, Calif., John Deines of Fairfield and Will and Dan Deines of Clay Center. His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

The road into the sunset is one we each must tread
And tho’ it brings us sorrow when a loved one goes ahead,
Still there Is comfort knowing we shall meet again someday,
When grief and pain are over and the clouds have rolled away.
