HERBERT W. UFFELMAN, passed into eternal glory and joined the company of Saints Saturday, Dec 27, 2008. Born May 9, 1924, in North Judson, Ind., to William and Lydia Uffelman, he was a longtime resident of the Fort Wayne area. A graduate of Hoagland High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He married Alice H. Hoffman on June 22, 1946. He was a hardware salesman for Schlatter Hardware and Schaefer Hardware. A longtime member of Peace Lutheran Church, he was active in the choir, held leadership positions, and served on many church boards. He also volunteered at Lutheran Home and as a poll worker.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; their five children, Kenneth (Cheryl) Uffelman of Herndon, Va., Lynn (Jan) Uffelman of Wolcottville, Carol (Bruce) McAfee, Mark (Billie) Uffelman and James (Judy) Uffelman, all of Fort Wayne; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Lester Uffelman.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, 4900 Fairfield Ave., with calling one hour prior at the church. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Road. Burial in Concordia Cemetery Gardens.
