"Johnstown Tribune," Johnstown, PA- May 22, 1908:

Daniel M. Peer, a Civil War veteran died last evening at the home of his son James Peer, on Von Lunen Road, Seventh Ward, aged sixty-nine years. Mr. Peer's health had been failing for some time, and recently uremic poisoning developed and resulted in his death. The deceased was born in New Jersey, but located in Westmoreland County, this state, many years ago. He served two enlistments in the Rebellion, the first in Company H, One Hundred and Thirty Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and the second in Battery D, Fifth Heavy Artillery. For the past thirty years Mr. Peer had been an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He came to Johnstown a few months ago to make his home with his children. The deceased is survived by his wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth (Emmaline) Rowland, and by these children: James, referred to above William T., proprietor of the Jefferson Hotel, No. 800 Railroad Street; John W., of Seward; Daniel, of Lilly; David of Jeannette, and Elizabeth, wife of Frank Callihan of Grant Street, this city. David Peer of New Florence is a brother of the deceased. The remains were last night prepared for burial by Undertaker Pendry. They will be taken to New Florence over the Pennsylvania Railroad on the 9:26 train Sunday morning for interment in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.*

(*He was actually buried in the Soldier's Circle, Grandview Cemetery. The headstone on his grave was erroneously inscribed David instead of Daniel. When the cemetery replaced all of the headstones in the Soldier's Circle, they ordered a new stone going off of the old one, thus the new stone has the same error.)
