James P. Makowski Sr., 76, of Syracuse died Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center.
He was born in Syracuse. He retired in 1986 after 23 years with Crucible Steel and formerly worked 13 years for New York Central Railroad. He was a communicant of Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a field medic with a medical unit attached to the 142nd Infantry Regiment in France and Central Europe.
Survivors: His wife of 53 years, the former Mary Kabacinski; two daughters, Christine Olszewski of Bangor, Pa., and Frances Smith of Fairmount; two sons, James P. Jr. of Fair Haven and Michael of West Monroe; a sister, Sarah Makowski of Syracuse; eight grandchildren.
Services: 8:15 a.m. Saturday at Hollis Funeral Home and 9 a.m. in Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Burial, Sacred Heart Cemetery, Geddes. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, 1105 W. Genesee St., Syracuse.
