Joseph John Mack Jr., director of Brighton Family Center, died Friday evening at his home after a long illness. He was 42 and lived at 411 Parsons Drive, Westvale.

Mr. Mack was a life resident of the Syracuse area. He was a graduate of Westhill High School and received his bachelor's degree from North Texas State University in 1971.

He earned a master's degree in social work from Syracuse University. While pursuing his graduate degree he did a field placement at Child and Family Services and joined the agency's staff after graduation. From there he went to Elmcrest Children's Center as a counselor and later became supervisor of its residential program. Twelve years ago Mr. Mack became director of Brighton Family Center of Catholic Charities.

Brian Walton, executive director of Catholic Charities, said that Mr. Mack's sense of humor made him particularly effective in dealing with people. ''It was easy to be around Joe. He used his humor to relate to people, and that made them feel safe with him. He cared deeply about people. It was very easy to like Joe a lot,'' he said.

Mr. Mack was a member of the American Council of Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers. He served on the Adolescent Pregnancy Council and was a member of the Brighton Area Coordinating Committee and Neighborhood Housing Services.

Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Sutton Mack; a daughter, Carey Ann Mack, at home; his parents, Joseph and Janet Mack of Westvale; two brothers, Daniel of Westvale and William of Syracuse ; three sisters, Catherine Parentau of Parish, Mary Dorsey of Auburn, and Barbara Czornij of Lakeland.

Services will be 9:15 a.m. Monday at John C. Tindall Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Charles of Borromeo Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. James Matthews. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Warners.
