Dick began working with his father around 1945, and was considered a lineman at the age of 16 when the family started moving along wherever the jobs where, and there were many moves to different locations in Minnesota. Their work was to provide some of the first electrical line to rural areas.
In 1955 Dick became partners with his father and formed Kainz Contractors based out of Pierz. His brother, Kenny soon joined the business. Kainz Contractors had construction projects over a five state area, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In 1965 the family business settled in Custer.
