Dick was born December 4, 1934, in Morrison County, MN, to Vernon and Veronica (Krych) Kainz, Dick's early years were spent helping his mother, Vernie, and siblings run an 80-acre farm along the Platte River near Pierz, MN. At this time, around 1943, his father, Vern, and a cousin Tony Dambovy had a partnership named Commonwealth Construction Company. Dick began working with his father around 1945, and was considered a lineman at the age of 16 when the family started moving along wherever the jobs where, and there were many moves to different locations in Minnesota. Their work was to provide some of the first electrical line to rural areas.
In 1955 Dick became partners with his father and formed Kainz Contractors based out of Pierz. His brother, Kenny soon joined the business. Kainz Contractors had construction projects over a five state area, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In 1965 the family business settled in Custer.
Dick was exceptionally good at fixing things and was proud to be involved in a neighborhood group that fixed up the Glen Erin School.
On June 29, 1957, Dick married Darlene Bernice Schulte at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, MN. Dick and his family were members of Custer Lutheran Church since it was first established.
Dick is survived by his wife, Darlene of Custer; his children, Greg (Sherry) Kainz of Arvada, CO; Kristi (Allen) Scott of Custer; Lisa (Michael) Schaertl of Shortsville, NY; Jeff (Teresa) Kainz of Mt. Vernon, WA; brothers, Kenneth (Sue) Kainz and Dean (Marge) Kainz both of Custer; sisters, Gladys (Gordon) Babcock of Rapid City; Gayle (Leroy) Anderson of Custer; Grace (Gerry) Meier of Fulda, MN; Vera (Terry) Ellerton of Custer; eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church in Custer with Pastor Tom Opoien and Pastor Kent Narum officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
