Denny (Dean) Wallace Kainz was born May 27, 1944, in Little Falls, MN, to Vernon and Vernie (Krych) Kainz. On Sept 2, 1967, Dean married Margie Ellen Kayl and the couple moved to Custer, SD. Their union was blessed with four children Dawn, Renee, Travis and Andy.

Dean served in the US Army from June 1965 to June 1967. He served in Vietnam and on March 13, 1967, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for Heroism Under Fire.

In 1964, he became a partner with his father, Vernon, and brothers, Kenny and Dick in Kainz Contractors. They worked building power lines across Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. In 2006, he became the owner of Kainz Contractors, Inc. where he continued working until the time of his death.

On August 25, 1969, Dean lost both of his hands below the elbow due to an electrical accident. In December 1969, after a brief recovery period, Dean climbed a power line pole with prosthetics, just to prove that he could do it.

Dean spent numerous hours camping, horseback riding, trail riding, attending rodeos and sharing his love of nature, animals and horses with his children and grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. In 2007, Dean was awarded the "Good Neighbor" Award by The Catalyst Club for "Freely and lovingly giving of himself in service to family, friends, neighbors and community whenever the need arose."

On May 1, 2011, Dean passed away suddenly after visiting relatives in Waterloo, IA. He was 66 years old.

Survivors include his wife, Margie of Custer, SD, two daughters, Dawn (Pete) Murray of Custer, SD, Renee (Troy) Nicks of Vermillion, SD, and one son Andy (Tiffany) Kainz of Custer, SD. Siblings - Gladys (Gordon) Babcock of Rapid City, SD, Ken (Sue) Kainz of Custer, SD, Gayle (LeRoy) Anderson of Custer, SD, Vera (Terry) Ellerton of Custer, SD, Grace (Ger) Meier of Fulda, MN, one sister-in-law Darlene Kainz of Custer, SD. Ten grandchildren, Alex (Stephanie), Taarna, Mikey and Torrie Murray, Zach and Amber Nicks, Alexis, Angie, Allyson and Amarri Hiermeier and one great-grandchild Madison Murray.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Vernie Kainz, brother Dick, and son Travis.

Wake services will be at 7:00pm on Thurs, May 5, 2011, at St. John's Catholic Church in Custer, SD. Funeral services will be Friday, May 6, 2011, at 10:00am at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Pete Kovarik officiating. Interment will follow at Custer Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Terry Ellerton, Bill Brisk, Monty Bradeen, Sam Boettcher, Duffy Buresh and Randy Rossman. A memorial has been established in Dean's name.
