Ruth's maiden name has not yet been sufficiently confirmed in my oppinion, although old Dean records indicate it was Barnes. A Court document in Richland Co. suggests that Ruth had at least one daughter prior to a union with Benjamin, named Mary Ann Souper/Soper. Ruth appears to be the 2nd wife of Benjamin Dean and the marriage date and location are so far unknown. Very little is known about Ruth Barnes/Soper, A document linked to my family also names Ruth Barnes as the wife of Benjamin. I have a copy of a Richland Co. Probate Will that links Benjamin, Ruth and the children, so I also linked them on Find-a-Grave as stated in the Will. I am still looking for more facts and documents to support them. Thanks for any help, clues, or additional information!!!! TJD 2011

Ruth was residing with her son James Dean in 1860 - recorded on the census of Washington twp, Richland Co., OH - she was 81 years old.

"We have personal knowledge via our Soper/Smith lineage, that Ruth Barnes was first married to John Soper who died 1809 in MD. Ruth & John had two known children: Nelson B. Soper b. @1805 and Mary Ann Soper b. 1807 Montgomery Co., MD. Mary Ann Soper married Samuel Smith and moved to Benzie Co., MI where they resided for several years - both died there and are buried in Benzonia Twp. Cemetery, Benzie Co., MI see Find A Grave#36874693 for Mary Ann. A daughter of Samuel & Mary Ann Smith returned to Mansfield, Richland Co., OH with her husband, Wm. Augustus Ramsey Patterson - they died in Mansfield but are interred in Benzonia Twp. Cemetery.- seemingly they maintained a communication with Richland Co."

I was just reading about Benjamin and Ruth and I thought I would add a tiny bit of information to your cache. You have posted, "Benjamin was married to Ruth [Barnes] Soper, (also found in records spelled Loaper/Loper) about 1811, probably in Pennsylvania or maybe Jefferson County, Ohio"

If Ruth is the Barnes I believe her to be, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Barnes. She was born in Virginia with her siblings, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and John, before her parents moved to Frederick County, Maryland btwn 1790-1794.

Thomas' family (which included 3 more sons born in Maryland) emigrated to Jefferson County, Ohio about 1805. Two of his eldest children where married by then (Ben and Eliz) but they came too.

This, theoretically, is when Ruth married her first husband.

Thomas died either in Maryland or in Jefferson County, Ohio, as he is not buried with his wife MARY ANN in Richland County.

Also, both Benjamin and John J Barnes named their firstborn daughters "Ruth".

Married to John Soper 10 Jun 1800 in Montgomery County, Maryland. Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850, Dodd, Jordan, Liahona Research, comp.

Ruth and her first husband married in Maryland btwn 1800-1804. After her husband died, she brought her children to Ohio. The Barnes families emigrated to Richland County beginning in 1816, when Ben bought his first piece of land.
