"James Hanson Dean was born on the 15th of August, 1820, in Washington Township, Richland County, Ohio, the son of Benjamin 1777-1852 and Ruth [Barnes] Dean 1778-1866. James was a farmer all his life and as most families those days, was very active at the church. Not much personal information is actually known about James and no picture exists of this man that I have ever seen. He died in 1888 and I would assume there was several pictures taken of him before he passed. A distant cousin of mine, Dean Thomas, said he knew of a couple and they were last reported to him, "moved out of Ohio" with surviving relatives. I would be amazed if someone located them. Growing up as a boy, James would have lived a hard-working, dangerous life as a pioneer resident with this large farming family. The woods of Richland County was thick and untamed in the 1820's, plenty of bear, wild boar, wild cats, wolves, poisonous snakes and spiders to keep things interesting for the early residents. One settler claims to have killed 79 bears in just one township alone during his life. James Hanson Dean was married to Margaret Ritchie 1823-1909 on the 2nd of April, 1844, in Richland County, Ohio. @ Source: Marriage Records, Richland County, Ohio, volume 4, page 194 & 197. James and Margaret had four children; William Hanson Dean 1848-1939, married Alice Lucetta Clark 1851-1949; Benjamin Franklin Dean 1851-1900, married Amanda Rowe 1848-1929; James Morris Dean 1857-1923, married Emma F. Hanes 1863-1938; and John James "Jay" Dean 1861-1954; married Rilda Alice Ferguson 1859-1940. James Hanson Dean, age 68, died on the 9th of November, 1888, in Fredericktown, Knox County, Ohio. @ Source: Death Records, Knox County, Ohio, volume 3, page 18. He is buried with his wife and children in the Forest Cemetery, Fredericktown, Knox County, Ohio. @ Source: Copied from book, "Benjamin Dean Family in Ohio" - by Todd J. Dean, 2014.
