In 1844, Sebastian(49) and wife Catherine(48) with daughters Rebecca(23) and Elizabeth(11), left Kleingraben in the Thuringia province of Germany for the port city of Bremerhaven. There they boarded the three-masted sailing ship Washington. The ship was 110 feet long and 28 feet wide; designed to carry 149 passengers. After 49 days at sea, the ship arrived at New Orleans on October 26, 1844. There they boarded a river steamer for a four day 900 mile journey up the Mississippi River to Saint Louis, Missouri. They then went to Quincy, Illinois, and settled east of there at Columbus. A few years later they relocated to Coatsburg. Sebastian was titled doctor due to his effective treatment of people and animals with his homeopathic medicines.
