Johann Karl Friebus was married twice. His first two children are daughters of Karl and his first wife. Karl's second wife was Maria Katharina Scholl.
He departed Hamburg, Germany for East London, Süd Africa on 15 Nov 1877 aboard the ship Godeffroy.
Johann Carl Friebus became a member of the Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutherische St Martini Kirchengemeinde, Kapstadt, Südafrika, on 16 December 1879.
Johann Carl Friebus arrived in New York on 22 Apr 1885 aboard the bark Parenti from Cape Town.

Father Friebus, a very aged gentleman and citizen of this town, died on Monday night of this week after an illness of about three months, during which time he was reduced to a mere skeleton. Mr. Friebus and family came to America from Russia [South Africa] seven [six] years ago, and has, besides an aged wife, quite a family of children and grand-children living in this country.
