MAURICE JOSEPH KOESTER

Maurice Joseph Koester, age 68 of rural Ashmore, Coles Co., IL, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Maurice was born November 6, 1941 in Effingham, Illinois the son of Joseph and Helen (Hoelscher) Koester. He married Patricia (Harrell) Oakley on June 23, 1982 in Paris, Illinois. In addition to his loving wife Pat, he is survived by two stepsons, Rick Oakley and wife Judy of Danville, Illinois and Randy Oakley and wife Fawn of Manchester, Tennessee; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters, Jo Ann Johnston and husband Bob of Neoga, Illinois, Elaine Laue and husband Tony of Springfield, Illinois; two brothers, Larry Koester and wife Linda of Newton, Illinois and Gerry Koester and wife Linette of Ashmore; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Koester and two infant sisters.

Maurice was a 1959 graduate of Effingham St. Anthony High School and was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He transferred his church membership to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston after moving to Ashmore. He was a member of the Charleston Elks B.P.O.E. 623, the Coles County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

Since the young age of five – Maurice knew he wanted to be a farmer. He accomplished that life-long dream farming first in Jasper County and then in the Ashmore area – it was truly his life. When he wasn't farming Maurice enjoyed meeting friends at McDonalds and enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation. He will be remembered as a good-natured and generous man with a sincere love for his farm and family.

The funeral for Maurice Koester was Monday at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston with the Rev. John Titus officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Mattoon. The Adams Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Pianist Joyce Harwood and violinist Terry Coulton accompanied vocalist Bernie Pluard, who lead the congregational songs including "Unless a Grain of Wheat," "Song of Farewell" and "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers were Tony Koester, Michael Koester, Brian Koester, Kevin Koester, Brad Koester, Chad Koester, Keith Koester and Eric Bierman.
