BIOGRAPHY

Wilson was born on May 4, 1876 in Catskill, Greene County, NY. He was the 2nd son of three for Wilson P. Tanner & Cornelia Swartwout. His parents lived in Catskill until 1897, when they purchased a farm previously owned by James White Tanner near Preston Hollow. After this move, he remained in Rensselaerville for the rest of his life.

About 1896, he wed Mary Plass of Germantown, Columbia County, NY. They had one son (Raymond John) and two daughters, Cornelia (Gifford) & Carrie (Wood). Wilson worked as a farm laborer before starting a farm of his own, which he primarily worked through 1915.

In 1918, Wilson was working with brother Charles at the Shufelt-Tanner Autobus service that provided transit between Rensselaerville & Albany. Charles had started this successful business with his 1st cousin, Stanton Shufelt, in 1914. Sadly, both brothers succumbed from pneumonia that was initially caused by influenza during the Spanish Flu pandemic. Wilson had been caring for his ailing brother Charles (who died December 30, 1918) when he himself succumbed on January 5th, 1919, at just 42 years of age. He is buried with wife Mary at Medusa Cemetery in Medusa, NY.

Interment was at Medusa.

Note: Although Wilson's headstone supports 1875 as his date of birth, all other sources I have (including census records and his WWI Draft Card) indicate that he was born in 1876.

1919 NY State Death Index supports January 5 death in Rensselaerville. Cert #: 4456.

Middle name written as listed on his daughter Cornelia's revised birth certificate.
