Rites Monday for Mildred Harpenau

Mrs. Mildred Harpenau, 81, of Remsen died Thursday, Apr. 7, 1994, at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, after a brief illness.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Apr. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church here. Rev. John J. McGuirk officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harpenau was born July 22, 1912, at Remsen, the daughter of Dominic and Mary (Arend) Nilles. She was raised and educated in the Remsen area.

She married Henry Harpenau on Dec. 29, 1931, at Remsen. The couple farmed near Remsen until retiring and moving into Remsen in 1966. Mr. Harpenau died on Mar. 21,1973.

Mrs. Harpenau had been a resident of Happy Siesta Nursing Home here since October 1993.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and Catholic Daughters of America.

Surviving are three sons, Clarence, Jim, and Richard, all of Remsen; five daughters, Mrs. Darrel (Cloette) Schroeder of Le Mars, Mrs. Denis (RoseMary) Schilmoeller of Granville, Mrs. Ervin (JoAnn) Ahlers and Mrs. Larry (Ann) Galles, both of Remsen, and Carol Harpenau of Omaha, Nebr.; 42 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Francis Nilles of Remsen.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Paul; one daughter, Jeanette, in infancy; two brothers, LeRoy, in infancy, and Art; and three sisters, Mrs. Ray (Catherine) Meis, Mrs. Nick (Bernadette) Gergen and Mrs. Bill (Lucille) Christoffel.

Casket bearers were Ken Ahlers, Lee, Mark, Mike, and Rick Harpenau, Russell Galles, Tom Schilmoeller, and Tony Schroeder.
