James Francis Hartzheim, Sr., 82, of Minocqua died Tuesday, February 21, at his home in Minocqua.

He was born December 24, 1923 in Juneau, Wisconsin, the son of Elmer "Cocky" Hartzheim and Erma (nee: Schrap) Hartzheim.

Jim was an accomplished athlete at Juneau High School. He went on to study at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, and at Marquette University dental school where he earned his DDS degree in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946, part of that time as a radioman in Hawaii. He also served as a dentist in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953, stationed the latter portion of that time in Garmisch, Germany, with a rank of First Lieutenant. His brother, Paul Hartzheim, and brother-in-law, John "Jack" Cummings, were killed in Europe during World War II.

Many will remember Jim, or "Doc" as most called him, as their hometown dentist with a whistle-while-you-work attitude. He operated a dental practice in downtown Minocqua from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. His office was located on main street, first above the current Ross Sportswear and second adjacent to the Lakeland Times; he then built a new and final office on W. Milwaukee St.

Doc was a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church since moving to Minocqua in 1953. He was also a long-time member of Madsen-Empey American Legion Post 89 and past member of the Minocqua Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He served twelve years on the Lakeland Union High School Board and six years on the Minocqua Town Board.

Doc had a friendly manner, always quick with a smile or lighthearted remark. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing and was an avid fan of the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, Marquette Warriors and Lakeland T-Birds.

After retirement, one of his favorite pastimes was visiting his children and grandchildren. He liked to lend a hand with projects around their homes. He also enjoyed running into friends and former patients while working part-time at the former Al's Lakeland Foods in downtown Minocqua and later as a greeter at the Minocqua Walmart.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Ellen (nee: Cummings) Hartzheim; ten children, Mike (Sue) Hartzheim, Tom Hartzheim, Pete (Suzi) Hartzheim, Ann (Jim) Hunt, Margaret Crosby, Jim Hartzheim, Jr., Tony Hartzheim, Mark Hartzheim, Cathy Hartzheim, Maureen (Lennie) Drewsen; daughter-in-law Sheila Hartzheim; son-in-law Fred Herlitz; one brother, Leo "Joe" (Rose) Hartzheim; two sisters, Mary Ruth Brady and Patricia (Elliot) Deniger; and fourteen treasured grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul Hartzheim, his son John Hartzheim and his daughter Mary Hartzheim.

Services will take place today, Friday, February 24, at Holy Family Catholic Church (formerly Our Lady Queen of the Universe), located at 1025 Margaret St. in Woodruff. Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. and the Funeral at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Memorials can be made to Seasons of Life Hospice in Woodruff, or to the Lance Armstrong Foundation via the web site www.maryhartzheim.com.

Bolger Funeral Home of Minocqua is handling the arrangements.
