Funeral services for Bessie M. Harvey were held October 11, 1997 in the United Church of Canistota. Rev. Roy Caudill officiated. Burial was in the Canistota Cemetery, Canistota, SD. Pallbearers were Tom and Cory Spicer, Dan Streff, Gorby Mason, Wendell Anderson, and Wayne Ortman.
Bessie M. Bergen was born July 28, 1911 in Canistota, SD. She grew up in Canistota and on April 1, 1934 she married Wilbur J. Harvey in Sheridan, Wyoming. After their marriage they lived in Centerville, SD, Portland, Oregon, and Custer, SD. In 1954 they moved to Canistota where they lived the rest of their lives. Her husband died in 1990. Bessie had spent the past six years at the Canistota Good Samaritan Center and she died there on October 8, 1997. She had reached the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 10 days.
She worked for many years at the Canistota Clipper newspaper and was a member of the United Church of Canistota. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Centerville, of the Rebecca Lodge, and of the Royal Neighbors. Bessie loved to bowl and dance and also enjoyed doing needlework.
Survivors include; one daughter Mrs. Gorby (Arlys) Mason of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters, Mrs. Jim (Kristal) Woehlke of Poughkeepsie, NY; and Mrs. Scott (Wendy) Myers of Austell, Georgia; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Lowell "Bud" Bergen of Auburn, Washington and James Bergen of Bunker, Missouri; and three sisters, Goldie Callies of Howard, SD; Mrs. Vinnie
(Virginia) Healy of Montrose, SD; and Mrs. Jerome (Frances) Hutton of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter, one brother, and one sister
