Clement Rolfes died at his home eight miles south-east, of Remsen in Remsen township Saturday following an illness of some five weeks caused by liver and stomach trouble. He has been in poor health all summer but his condition did not seem serious until a few weeks ago.
Henry Clement Rolfes was a native of Germany and was born fifty-two years ago last February at Steinleldt, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. When a young man he followed a sea-faring life and was a sailor for a number of years. He was united in marriage in his native place with Agnes Maering.
To their union twelve children were born, eight of whom with the widow are left to mourn the loss of a kind father. The children are Henry, Bernard, Frank, Herman, Lizzie, Dena, Agnes and Annie. He also leaves a brother, Frank Rolfes, of this city, a brother and sister at the home in Germany and a sister living in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mr. and Mrs. Rolfes came to Plymouth county about eighteen years ago and engaged in farming, living on farms in Plymouth, Union, Marion and Remsen townships. About four years ago they moved to their present location in Remsen township.
Mr. Rolfes was a good citizen and neighbor, a devoted father and husband and enjoyed the respect and esteem of a large number of friends. He was a devout member of the Roman Catholic church and was a member of the men's society of St. Joseph's church in this city. the funeral will be held this morning at St. Mary's chuch in Remsen and the interment made in the city cemetery at that place.
