George Arnold Heinen Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Warroad, MN on March 9, 2012 at the age of 78 years.

George was born on July 21, 1933 in Warroad, MN to Anna (Schmidt) and George Heinen. He grew up and went to school in Swift, MN. He and Harriet (Preuss) were married on July 1, 1962 in Esmond, ND. They have made their home in Warroad since that time.

George worked on the Heinen Mink Ranch full time from the 8th grade on. The ranch was in full operation until 1996, when he retired. George was active in the Minnesota Fur Breeders Association and the Lake Region Fur Farmers. He was known world-wide in the fur industry for his Rovalia Mink. George was one of the few in the county that raised this beautiful mink. These pelts were sought after by buyers from China, Italy, Russia and Paris. Designers like Christian Dior used the Rovalia Pelts for their designer fur coats. The Heinen Mink Ranch also developed the Heinen Buff Mink and had 35,000 mink on the ranch in the 80's. George also raised Canadian Lynx.

George was an avid fisherman and loved Lake of the Woods. He loved to golf and spent many hours on the courses at Warroad and Buffalo Point. George and Harriet built one of the first cabins on the North Shore of Buffalo Point and were chased off their lot by bear more than once when clearing their lot. 20ll was the first year that George was unable to get out into the woods for deer hunting. Opening day was one of his toughest days but he was proud when he got to go outside and look at Olivia's first deer. She dropped a big buck five minnutes after sunrise and got to share her story with Grandpa. George had never missed getting at least one deer for 63 years of deer seasons.

George and Harriet traveled extensively throughout Europe, China and the Holy Land. They also enjoyed their home in Arizona and traveling throughout the United States. They shared their love of traveling and adventure with the daughters and grandkids.

George enjoyed watching his grandkids and attended numerous sporting events, Roseau County Fair activities and recitals. They were his pride and joy and they sold their home in Arizona so that nothing would be missed. His grandchildren will remember fishing, driving the golf cart, searching for Easter Eggs, Disney World, and golfing with Grandpa.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet of Warroad; daughters: Heidi (Tom) Lien of Warroad and Jill (Rhett) Hulst of Salol, MN; 5 grandchildren: Giles, Tori, and Olivia Lien, Logan and Celena Hulst; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister, Shirley Gordon of Eureka, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Dean, John, Lois Fortier, and Marilyn Moyer.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 16, 2010 at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad. Visitation was on Thursday March 15 from 5-7PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad and one hour prior to the service. Interment was at the Riverside Cemetery in Warroad, MN.
