Avery Gene Reed, 83 of Rich Creek departed this life Monday, July 30th, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born in Glen Lyn on April 6th, 1929 and was the son of the late James Henry and Nettie Ann Virginia Mullins Reed. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Ira, Hugh, Watha, John and James Reed; and two sisters, Mary Booth and Helen Spangler.

An avid musician, Gene carried on a rich tradition of old time music forged by his father, the world-renowned Henry Reed. As part of the Reed Family Band, Gene played guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica. He was also an avid bowler, hunter, and fisherman. In addition, he coached and was commissioner of youth and adult league recreation for 50 years, and was widely known by everyone as "Uncle Avery." A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, he will be deeply missed by his family and many special friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 62 years, Alma Jewell Meadows Reed; two sons, William Steven Reed and wife Elizabeth Bennett Reed of Raleigh, North Carolina, Timothy Alan Reed, Sr. and wife Linda Doyle Reed of Princeton, West Virginia; five grandchildren, Christophor Steven Reed and fiancée Jessica Lloyd of Graham, North Carolina, Avery Michael Sean Reed and wife Kristin Hutson Reed and their children, Avery Landon and Hutson Bennett of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Bryan Keith Reed and wife Vanessa Eastman Reed and their children, Joshua Steven, Sophia Grace, and Lena Ann of Hope Mills, North Carolina, Delnora Lynn Reed of Cookeville, Tennessee, Timothy Alan Reed, Jr. and wife Cassie Cahill Reed and their children, Brylan Thomas and Easton Matthew of Princeton, West Virginia; two brothers, Neal Reed of Statesboro, Georgia, and Alfred Dean Reed of Rich Creek, Virginia; two sisters, Ruth Ratcliff and Vella Anderson, both of Rich Creek; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 3rd, 2012 at 11 AM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Tony Reed, Minister, and Pastor David Spencer, officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Rich Creek. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service Thursday from 6 to 8 PM.
