Pieter (Peter) Groen
Death came this week to Peter Groen Sr., a Douglas County Pioneer, one of the oldest settlers in this vicinity, and for several years a resident of Corsica, So. Dak. Peter Groen is well known throughout this part of the county. He had reached the age of 86 years when he passed away, Monday, November 4, 1940.
Peter Groen Sr., was born November 30, 1854, at Pella, Iowa and passed away at the home of his son, John, in Armour, South Dakota. He spent his early childhood at Pella, Iowa, later moving to Orange City, Iowa where he was united in marriage to Jeanette De Geest in January, 1880. Two years later he moved to Dakota Territory and settled on a homestead near Harrison, So. Dak., where they lived until 1896 when they moved to a farm seven miles east of Corsica. They lived there until they retired from the farm in 1924 and moved to Corsica.
Mrs. Groen preceded him in death ten years ago, on March 25, 1930. Since that time, he has made his home with his children. About six months ago his health fallen, and he quietly passed away on the morning of November 4th.
He is survived by six children: Peter Jr., of Corsica; Anna Doscher, of Rapid City, So. Dak.; Ollie Sullivan of Miller, So. Dak.; Margaret Heezen of Stickney, So. Dak.; John of Armour, So. Dak.; Cleve (Cornelius in some records), of Corsica. Eighteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held today in the Grace Reformed Church.
