Mayme was BORN to John S. Seymour and Ellen 'Ella' Case in Iowa on March 3, 1888.
At a very young age she was ADOPTED by Joseph and Mary Noethe. By the 1900 census she is listed as their adopted daughter.
On November 30, 1907 she married Frederick Peter Bebensee (1883-1940)in Elkton, SD. Mayme applied for the marriage license at the county seat of Brookings, SD. They go on to have 13 children:
Arnold(1908),Wilbert(1908).Roy(1910),Florence(1913),Lucille(1916),Evelyn(1918),Harvey(1919),Minnie(1921),Elmer(1923)and another daughter. Perhaps three died at birth?
In 1929, Frederick begins to display symptoms of Huntington's Chorea (a disease that ran through the generations of Bebensee men...normally disappears after three generations). He is admitted to the Minnesota State Mental Hospital for a short period but returns home. After a short time he is readmitted and ends up spending the last 11 years of his life there. From data that I have gathered it is my supposition that his family told people that he had been in an auto accident....and had either died or was injured badly enough he would not return home. When he is readmitted he goes in under the assumed name of Elmer Allen. Was this to 'hide' him? A way for Mayme not to have to pay medical bills? Or was it so she could go on with her own life?
Mayme moves to Minneapolis, Minnesota and is listed on the 1930 census as widowed...though Frederick wouldn't die for another 10 years. She's working as a maid at the Stratton Hotel and lives at 400 N.E. 6th. In 1932 she moves to 212 S.E. 6th.
In 1936, Mayme marries a second time to John B. Peterson. Once again...Frederick doesn't die until 1940!? Though they both live in Minneapolis they come to Brookings, SD to marry and then return home. This could be because Mayme's parents live around Elkton, SD. On the marriage license Mayme now lists herself as divorced and John is listed as a bachelor.
Mayme lives in the Minneapolis area until her death.
