BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Oline was my great-grandmother. I did not know Oline, but have pieced together a story of her life from various genealogical sources including Ancestry.com, Shawano County Genealogy, and the Norwegian online archives. I gratefully acknowledge the help of the Norwegian Genealogy group on Facebook for locating, translating and explaining some of the Norwegian records.

Oline was born in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway to Engebret Olsen (born March 28, 1828 in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway) and Andrea Hansdatter (born July 11, 1826 in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway). There were six other children - one girl and five boys. Their family farm was named Gammelmoen, and conventionally Oline's full name could have been Oline Engebretsdatter Gammelmoen. In the Norway census, though, she and her siblings are all listed with the surname Engebretsen. She was christened March 18, 1860 in Elverum.

In the 1865 census, Oline and her family were still at Gammelmoen. Her father Engebret was Gaardbruger og Selveier (farmer and owner) of the farm.

Oline's parents died within months of each other when she was ten years old. Andrea died in 1870, 11 days after the christening of her last child, at the age of 44. Her death record reads, "Inderstkone Andrea Hansd." An "inderstkone" is the wife of a man who is a lodger. Engebret was 42, the family had left their farm Gammelmoen in 1869 or 1870, and were now lodging at Skjærbæk.

Oline's father, Engebret Olsen, died just a few months after Andrea. The death of both parents must have been devastating for the seven children, who ranged in age from 17 to newborn. The children were then dispersed to different households.

In 1874, Oline was confirmed at age 15. At that time, she was living on a farm called Skjefstad. Her younger brothers were at two other farms - Emil at Korsveibakken, and Hans at Kjærneby.

In 1882 their oldest sibling, Oluf, emigrated to America on the SS Indiana, arriving in Philadelphia May 24, 1882. Oluf was now 29, having been born in 1853. His occupation on the ship's passenger list was "laborer." On October 30, 1884, he filed a Statement of Intent to become a U.S. citizen in Shawano County, Wisconsin. An "Olif Engebrightsen" was recorded as becoming a U.S. citizen on March 30, 1885; perhaps that is his record.

Back in Norway, Oline at some point went to work as a maid at a farm called Løken in Elverum. On June 12, 1887, at age 27, she gave birth to a son Einar Louis. Oline and Einar's father Ole Johnsen Houm, were not married. Ole was 19 (20 the following month) and Oline was 26.

The official state church of Norway was an evangelical Lutheran Church. According to familysearch.org, the way back to church fellowship for unmarried mothers was through absolutions; she would have been expected to announce in church who the father was (Bishop Eilif's statutes of 1320).

Three months after Einar's birth, Oline and Einar emigrated to the United States in the company of Oline's brother, Oluf. Oluf had already come to the United States in 1882, had established himself in Shawano County, Wisconsin, and had attained US citizenship.

Oline and her brother traveled on the SS Geiser, which sailed from Cophenhagen and arrived in New York on October 14, 1887. In the passenger list, Oline's calling was "Mrs." and her surname was entered as Engebretsen (the same as her brother's). Einer's name was also noted as Engebretsen. In the United States, Oline went by her father's surname, which was Olsen, but Americanized to Olson, until she married Lars Olof Tullberg on January 6, 1891. Oline was 19 years younger than Lars.

Oline and Lars had three children together - Carl John Tullberg, Alfred Florenteen Tullberg, and Hadda O. Tullberg (named after Lars' first wife Hadda Johnsdr, who had died). Carl and Alfred both served in World War I. Carl's gallantry and devotion to duty entitled him to wear the Silver Star. Hadda only survived to six years old, dying of "dropsy" just a few months before Oline herself passed away after a nine-month long battle with consumption (tuberculosis). Oline was only 41 when she died.
