John immigrated from Hanover, Germany with his parents prior to 1860 and settled near Pine Grove in Lawrence County, Ohio.

John married Anna Maria Agnes Ghearing in St. Marys Catholic Church in Pine Grove on December 21, 1861. He registered in the Civil War draft with his brother, George, in June 1865.

On October 2, 1866 in the Lawrence County Probate Court became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. He worked as a furnace filler at the Pine Grove furnace.

While living in Pine Grove, he and Agnes had seven children; Mary, Frank, Maria Elizabeth, Julia, Anna, Catherine, and Matilda.

John died of paralysis on October 21, 1901 in Ironton, Ohio. He is buried next to his wife in Section E of Calvary Cemetery in Upper Township in Lawrence County.
