AUGUST F. GROTE
August F. Grote, age 81, passed away March 30, 1959 at Wadsworth Veterans Hospital at Wadsworth, Kansas.

He was born February 12, 1878 at Goddingen in Hanover Germany. He came to America with his parents in 1889 at the age of 11 years arriving in Lohville, Iowa April 1, 1889.

He joined the church in his youth and at the time of his death was a member of the First Methodist Church.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in March 11, 1901. He was discharged in March 10, 1905. He re-enlisted in December 6, 1905 and was discharged on December 5, 1909.

He was married to Freida C. Munz November 26, 1908. The biggest share of his life ws spent as a traveling salesman for the Kansas City Homepathy Pharmacy Co. He was also in business about ten years at Berwick where he ran the elevator and general store.

He retired at the age of 68. He had many interests in behalf of the city, serving as assessor three years, then Justice of the Peace and Police Judge.

To this union six sons were born, two died in infancy and two later. August F. J. at the age of 14 and Rolland Paul at the age of 28. His parents, sisters and brothers preceded him in death. He leaves his wife Frieda, two sons, Harold of Sabetha and Lloyd of St. Joseph, Mo., and eight grandchildren.

They celebrated their Golden Anniversary this last November 26, 1958.

He has been in failing health for the last five years being in and out of Winter Hospital at Topeka.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday April 2, 1959 at the Church of the Brethren with Rev. John Campbell officiating.

Interment will be in the Sabetha cemetery.
