SABETHA HERALD (Sabetha, Kansas)- Wednesday, February 4, 1924- Page 7.
AUGUSTUS FREDERICK GROTE, JR.
Augustus Frederick Grote, Jr. died Sunday night as a result of injuries received when a gasoline barrel exploded. Augustus is the 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Grote of Berwick. He had been working with a gasoline engine Sunday afternoon. Presumably he went to the gasoline barrel to get gasoline. No one saw him, but it is supposed he in some way ignited the gasoline, possibly to see the contents of the barrel. His father heard an explosion about 5:30 p.m. and on going outside found the boy unconscious and in flames. The fire was extinguished and Augustus was brought to Sabetha hospital where four s-ray pictures were taken. In spite of all that could be done he passed away. It is thought internal injuries were the direct cause of his demise.

The funeral of Augustus Grote was held this afternoon, Wednesday, from the Grote residence. Augustus was aged 14 years, 4 months and 30 days. He was born September 4, 1909. Interment was in Sabetha cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. Shulenberger.

It was with the most sincere regret that Berwick and Sabetha people heard of this unfortunate and untimely accident to one so young. Augustus was widely known and well liked, always associated with his kindly pleasant father at the Berwick store. His death is felt as keenly by Sabetha folks as by the people of Berwick, all of whom extend deep sympathy to the bereaved.
