Harold C. Grote died July 23, 1996, at the Sabetha Community Hospital, Sabetha, KS, at the age of 78.

He was born July 5, 1918, at Berwick, KS, the son of August Frederick and Frieda Munz Grote, one of four children. He grew u in the Berwick area, attending grade school there and graduating from Sabetha High School in 1937.

He married Lois Kreitzer on July 23, 1942, at Tacoma, WA. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 154th Field Artillery Battalion in the Aleutian Islands and in the South Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Logan, CO.

He returned to Sabetha and worked for the U.S. Post Office for 30 years and owned and operated Grote Motor Co. for 40 years before retiring.

Harold was baptized in the Trinity Church of the Brethren in 1945, where he served as a deacon, steward and usher for many years. He was a life member and past Commander of Sabetha VFW Post #7285 and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home in Sabetha; sons, Roger Grote, Sabetha, KS; Stanley Grote, Bayard, IA; Paul Grote, Sabetha, KS; daughter, Nancy Cox, Sabetha, KS; brother, Lloyd Grote, Hamilton, OH; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Larry Grote on August 1, 1987; brothers, August Grote, Jr.; Rolland Grote; and a grandchild who died in infancy.

Funeral services were held July 26, 1996, at the Trinity Church of the Brethern. Burial was in the Sabetha cemetery.
