Johanna settled in San Francisco, California, where she lodged with the Karner family and met her husband Joseph Lechner. Although she was baptized in Denmark in the Lutheran faith, Johanna and Joseph were married at St. Boniface Catholic Church on Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco. She had six children, three boys and three girls, but one boy and one girl died in early childhood due to illnesses.
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the subsequent fires destroyed their residence and the winery where Joseph worked. The winery operation was moved to Napa, California and the family followed. Johanna and Joseph built a house on Evans Avenue in the Alta Heights area of Napa where the family lived. She passed away at age 52.

Resident of Alta Heights Passed Away at Shurtleff Hospital on Friday.
Mrs. Joseph Lechnea, who resides at Alta Heights, passed away Friday morning at 2 o'clock at the Shurtleff Hospital, where she was taken Thursday to undergo treatment. She was operated on two months ago, and gradually weakened till the end came Friday.
She was 52 years of age, and leaves a husband and five children, Frank, Elsie, Leo and Florence, to mourn her departure. The husband, Jos. Lechner, is foreman of the Repsold winery in this city.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence at Alta Heights.
