Joseph Lechner was named Franz Joseph Lechner, but went by the name Joseph or Joe. He was one of three children having an older brother and a sister.

He was born in Thaur, a small village about 7 miles from the town of Innsbruck, Tirol, Austria. The house he grew up in still stands (2013), and is the best looking house in the village. His older brother had inherited the house because it was the custom at the time, and as of August 2013, the house was being lived in by three family descendants.

Joseph immigrated to the United States because he could not find work. He first settled in San Francisco, California, and lodged with a family having the surname Karner. He found work at the Repsold Wine Company, the largest independent wine merchant in San Francisco.

Joseph married Johanna Campradt at St. Boniface Catholic Church on Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco. They had three boys and three girls, but due to illnesses a boy and a girl did not survive their childhood.

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the subsequent fires, the family moved to Napa, California, where Joseph and Johanna remained until their passing.
