--Daughter of Albert J. Schmidt and the former Bertha Zelma Patton.
--Darlene married first Elmer Paul Kattelmann on November 17, 1945, in the Hermann Methodist Church, Hermann, MO. Elmer died August 6, 2003. She married secondly James Frederick Cappel on April 4, 2009, in St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann. Mr. Cappel passed away March 24, 2013.
--Darlene grew up on the farm in Montgomery County, MO, near McKittrick until about 1941 when she and her family relocated to Hermann. From 1945 to 2009 she lived on her husband Elmer's Gasconade County farm outside of Hermann. From 2009 to 2014, she lived in Hermann.
--She was a homemaker and farmer's wife. She also worked as a cook at the Gasconade County R-1 Schools for several years, at International Shoe Company, and at Heberle Packing Company, all of Hermann.
--Raised niece and nephew Lisa & Calvin Stiers with her husband Elmer following the death of her sister Irma I. Stiers.
--Darlene was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann. She was also a member of St. Paul Women's Fellowship, and the Hermann Area District Hospital Auxiliary. During her childhood, she was a member of McKittrick Methodist Church and Hermann Methodist Church.
--She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren.
--She died at the age of 88 on Friday, December 12, 2014, at the Hermann Area District Hospital, Hermann, MO.
--Survived by adopted daughter Lisa Heying and husband Stanely of Rhineland, adopted son Calvin Stiers and special friend Debbie Kopmann of Hermann, four grandchildren, Shaun Heying and Wesley Heying of Hermann, Alison Heying of Rhineland, and Kristin Stiers; one sister, Dorothy A. "Dot" Busen and husband Gene of North Fort Myers, FL; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
--She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her sister Irma Stiers, and her brother Marvin Schmidt.
--Funeral Services were held Monday, December 15th, at 1:00 p.m. in the Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, Missouri, with Rev. James Elliott officiating.
