--Only Surviving Child of Walter C. Patton and the former Ida Virginia Chaney.

--Raised on the farm in McKittrick, Missouri and married to Albert Schmidt (1897-1952) on November 14, 1923, in McKittrick, officiated by Rev. Martin P. Schroedel (pastor of St. Marcus Church, Rhineland).

--Had four children: Marvin Edward (1924-2006), Zelma Darlene (1926-2014), Irma Illiene (1930-1964), and Dorothy Alberta "Dot" (1933-2018).

--She and her husband were divorced in January 1940, and she had a hard time raising her 4 children financially but continued to take care of Albert's grandmother Caroline Bertha Rehmert Schmidt (1852-1940) and her own uncle Willis Patton (1849-1940) until they both died.

--By 1941 she moved to nearby Hermann where she was an active member of the Hermann Methodist Church and the Methodist Women's Group. They moved after Irma nearly died from appendicitis.

--She was employed as a cook at the hospital in Hermann for a time. She was retired from Rite Point.

--Bertha's daughter Irma died of scleroderma in 1964, after having 5 children of her own.

--Bertha died on July 5, 1981, at Frene Valley Nursing Home in Hermann at 85 years old and was survived by 3 children: Marvin Schmidt & wife Ginny of Overland, Darlene Kattelmann & husband Elmer of Hermann, and Dot Busen & husband Gene of Charlotte; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 4 infant grandsons and her daughter, Mrs. Irma Stiers.

--Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 8, 1981, at Hermann United Methodist Church, with Rev. Stafford Kabler officiating.
